Federal Aid Assistance Programs
Federal Pell Grant is a federally funded entitlement program providing aid to students with demonstrated financial need as measured and determined by the FAFSA.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a federally funded aid program that provides assistance to students with exceptional financial need as measured and determined by the FAFSA. Limited funding is available and is intended to supplement Pell Grant funding.
Federal Work Study provides part-time employment to students with a demonstrated financial need as measured and determined by the FAFSA to help meet the cost of their education. Students must work to earn their award. Positions are available on campus. Students must be enrolled in 6 or more units and funding is limited.
Federal Direct Loans are subsidized and unsubsidized federally guaranteed low interest rate student loans and are not based on credit history. To be able to apply for a student loan, you must have a completed the current years FAFSA and have a completed file in Financial Aid and have been awarded.
After you receive your award letter or a no need letter, you can request a student loan through your student portal. Then usually within a few weeks you should get a loan packet with directions in your LCC Cougar email, if your file is complete.
Borrowers must complete Entrance Counseling online to understand their borrowing responsibilities. After completion of the Entrance Counseling, you will call the Financial Aid Office to make an appointment for a loan workshop. You must bring your completed loan packet with all required documentation to the workshop. Packets that are incomplete will be not be processed.
Federal Direct Subsidized Loan is a need-based student loan program designed to assist students with educational expenses while attending at least half-time in an eligible program of study. The interest is subsidized by the federal government as long as the student is enrolled at least half-time. Student must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress in their program.
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan can be need based or non-need based. Students will need to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress in their program of study. The interest on this loan is not subsidized by the federal government and begins to accrue when it is funded. Students have the option of making interest payments or deferring the interest payment.
